In this tutorial, you’ll learn how to create dust in Affinity Photo. By adding dust to images, you create a feel of atmosphere to your images. This effect works best with indoor images or backlit images.
Before you learn how to create dust, go to the following link to download the image used in the tutorial.
Step 1
Go to File > New. Next, set the Document Units to Pixels. Then, set the Page Width and the Page Height to 1000 px. Set the DPI (Dots Per Inches) to 72 px and click Create.

Step 6
After that, go to File > Export. Select PNG. Then, click Export. Label the file Dust Brush and save it.
Step 7
Go to File > Open and select the image you downloaded. Press CTRL + J to duplicate the image and turn the original image off.
Step 8
With the duplicated layer selected, go to the Toolbar and select Auto White Balance.
Step 9
In the Layers Panel, click the Adjustments icon and select the Recolor adjustment. Set the Hue to 195 degrees, the Saturation to 41 percent, and the Lightness to -20 percent. Then, lower the Opacity to 50%, and set the Blend Mode to Soft Light.

Step 17
After selecting the dust color, make sure the new layer we added is selected. Then, take the brush and start adding the dust. Start by placing dust below the lights and work your way to the floor adding dust. Make the dust that’s by the light smaller. Then, as you add dust towards the floor, make the dust slightly larger. To decrease the brush size, press the left bracket key, and press the right bracket key to increase the brush size.
