In today’s tutorial, we will create the Android logo in Affinity Designer. The Android logo is created from two basic shapes: rectangle and circle. See my other article to learn about other features of Affinity Designer and to see some of the things you can make with this program.
First, go to File > New to create a new document. Give the document the following properties.
Next, go to View and select Show Rulers (CTRL + R for the shortcut) to turn the rulers on.
Go to the Toolbar and turn the Snapping on.
Now, go to the ruler at the top and drag a guide down (the cursor should turn to up and down arrows) in the center of the document (place the guide at 540px).
Go to the ruler on the left side and drag a guide to the right (the cursor should turn to left and right arrows) in the center of the document (place the guide at 950px).
Go to the Tools Panel and grab the Rectangle Tool (Press M for the shortcut). Hold CTRL + Shift and draw a rectangle in the center of the guides. Give the rectangle the following Fill color Hex Code: #3DDC84.
Grab the Rectangle Tool again. Draw a rectangle on the left side of the original rectangle. Make sure the top of both rectangles line up with each other.
Select the rectangle you just created. Go to the Context Toolbar and set the Corner to Rounded.
Set the corner percentage to 50%. The rectangle will now change to a rounded rectangle.
With the rounded rectangle still selected, press CTRL + J (or right-click and select Duplicate) to duplicate it.
Hold Shift and drag the duplicated rectangle to the other side of the bigger rectangle.
Select the bigger rectangle. Go to the Tools Panel and select the Corner Tool. Select the bottom left node. Then, hold Shift to select the bottom right node.
In the Context Toolbar, set the Radius of the two corners to 55px.
Grab the Move Tool. Select one of the rounded rectangles (it doesn’t matter which one). Press CTRL + J to duplicate it (or right-click on it and select Duplicate).
Place the duplicated rectangle on the left part of the big rectangle.
With the rounded rectangle selected (the one that’s the leg), press CTRL + J (or right-click and select Duplicate) to duplicate it.
Hold Shift and drag the duplicated rectangle to the right side.
Grab the Ellipse tool from the Tools Panel. Hold CTRL + Shift to draw an ellipse. Make it the same size as the big rectangle.
Grab the Rectangle Tool and draw a rectangle halfway through the ellipse. Make sure the bottom part of the rectangle goes past the ellipse.
Select both the rectangle and the ellipse (hold Shift to select the ellipse).
Go to the Pathfinder Panel and select Subtract.
Place the shape overtop the big rectangle. Leave space between the two shapes.
Select the Ellipse tool. Hold CTRL + Shift to draw an ellipse on top of the half ellipse shape.
With the ellipse still selected, press CTRL + J (or right-click and select Duplicate) to make a duplicate of it.
Grab the Move tool. Hold Shift and drag the duplicated ellipse to the right side (you can change the color of the ellipses if you want so that you can see them).
Select the curve shape. Press CTRL + J to duplicate it.
With the duplicated shape selected, go to the Layers Panel. Hold CTRL and select both ellipses too.
Go to the Pathfinder Panel and select Subtract.
Go to the Layers Panel and delete the original half ellipse.
Go to the Tools Panel and select the Rectangle tool. Make a skinny horizontal rectangle.
Grab the Move Tool. Select the skinny rectangle. Hold Shift and rotate the rectangle 45 degrees.
Place the rectangle on top of the droid’s head.
With the skinny rectangle selected, press CTRL + J to duplicate it (or right-click on it and select Duplicate).
Go to the Rotation Panel and select Flip Horizontal.
Hold Shift and drag the duplicated rectangle to the right side.
To get rid of the guides, go to View and uncheck Show Guides (or press CTRL + ; for the shortcut).
Congratulations! This tutorial is complete! You’ve created the Android logo in Affinity Designer. If you liked this tutorial, check out more Affinity Designer tutorials. Plus, check out some other features of Affinity Designer.
