In the past few years, artificial intelligence has become a game-changer in many industries. Specifically in the graphic design industry, artificial intelligence has been driving innovation and transforming the way designers create visual content. Within this article, we will discuss the role of artificial intelligence in graphic design. Also, we’ll discuss its applications and how it is reshaping the creative process.

AI’s Role in Graphic Design

According to Britannica, artificial intelligence is “the ability of a digital computer” to mimic human intelligence. It performs tasks that usually would require human intervention. Additionally, artificial intelligence performs laborious tasks which allow humans to focus on more important things. In graphic design, there are AI algorithms that can analyze large amounts of data, generate visually stunning and meaningful designs, and learn from patterns. This tech allows designers to automate repetitive tasks and enhance their creativity. The AI used in graphic design can be categorized into two areas generative AI and augmentative AI.

Generative AI

Generative artificial intelligence is a type of algorithm (like ChatGPT) that is used to create new content. This content can be “text, images, or other media in response to prompts”. These AI systems analyze different design styles, trends, and user preferences. It then takes this data and generates unique and visually appealing designs. This capability saves graphic designers time and effort, and it allows them to focus on more complex and strategic aspects of the design process.

Augmented AI

In augmented artificial intelligence, humans use AI to help assist them in completing and creating things. For example, graphic designers can use augmented AI and software for creative endeavors. They can use AI-powered tools such as image recognition, color palette generation, layout suggestions, and font matching. By using these tools, designers can accelerate the design process and improve efficiency. In addition, this also helps designers to have a consistent output of their work.

Applications of AI in Graphic Design

One of the ways you can see artificial intelligence in graphic design is through automated design generation. AI tools and software can analyze users’ preferences and requirements to generate design concepts for creating logos and branding elements. Sites such as design.ai let designers create logos in seconds. Image editing/enhancement is another application of AI in graphic design. Now, there are AI-powered editing tools that automatically enhance photos, seamlessly remove backgrounds, adjust the lighting in photos, and generate realistic-looking images from scratch. Tools such as jasper.ai, remove.bg, and Let’s Enhance do these things.

Layout and Composition Assistance

Artificial intelligence can also be applied in graphic design through layout and composition. It can assist graphic designers in creating balanced and aesthetically pleasing designs. These AI tools assist by analyzing different design principles, user preferences, and design industry trends to give insights and recommendations to designers. For example, Uizard is an AI design tool for UI design. It allows you to convert hand-drawn sketches into wireframes. Plus, it generates UI designs with simple text.

Font and Color Recommendations

Font and color recommendations are another way AI is applied in graphic design. Using fonts and colors is an important part of graphic design. By using artificial intelligence for this, AI systems can analyze different font libraries and colors to recommend the best options that are needed for the design’s requirements. This helps graphic designers save time and create visuals that are harmonious and impactful. For instance, Khroma is an AI-based color combination generator created by George Hastings. It generates color combinations based on your selection of colors and from human-made color palettes across the web. Also, Fontjoy is an AI-based site that helps to make font pairing simpler.

The Future of Artificial Intelligence in Graphic Design

As artificial intelligence continues developing, graphic designers will be able to have access to and use AI tools that can understand users’ preferences, emotions, etc. In turn, this will create more personalized and tailored design experiences. Whether it’s image editing, layout assistance, or automated design generation, AI is also empowering designers to create more efficiently and design impactful visuals. Artificial intelligence in graphic design should be seen as/used as a complement that enhances a designer’s creativity. For all the benefits that AI provides, human creativity is still important and can’t be replaced by AI. The world still needs the unique abilities of graphic designers who can think critically and infuse emotions into their designs.
